Has your Business Experienced Increases in Energy Costs?
Energy bills have risen around 40% over the last 12 months. This is due to a number of factors including:
Oil Price Increases
Continental gas prices are still directly linked to oil prices so the recent high oil prices of over $60 a barrel have driven up the price of gas. This increases UK gas prices because Britain is connected to the European gas market through the gas interconnector pipeline.
Coal Price Increases
Coal accounts for around 35% of Britain’s generation.
Gas Price Increases
In the last 2 years the price of gas has increased due to high oil prices and declining UK gas supplies.
Environmental Costs
The Government and EU have put in place the EU- Emissions Trading Scheme to cut carbon and other environmentally harmful emissions. This increases wholesale electricity prices as it is likely to curb output at coal –fired power stations. In addition, the EU’s Large Combustible Plant Directive is also likely to increase the price of coal –fired generation when it comes into force in 2008, in order to reduce carbon emissions.
Transporting Energy
In recognition of the need to replace distribution networks, Ofgem allowed energy companies to increase distribution prices by 1% in 2005, thereafter to increase in line with inflation.
